Frequently Asked Questions: Answers for parentsWhat is My Kite Will Fly? My Kite Will Fly is an interactive website and program designed for children aged 3-12 whose mothers have been diagnosed with cancer. The program aims to guide children and their parents through their cancer journey and encourage open and honest communication through creative interventions and expressive arts such as painting, sculpting and drawing. Can my child keep their artwork? All artwork remains the property of its creator. Some children might like their work included in the online gallery on the My Kite Will Fly website. Their work may be borrowed, scanned or photographed digitally then uploaded onto the website with the child's consent. All originals will be returned to the children to keep. When will my kids take part in the program? Currently, we are able to see children when parents need treatment at a hospital – other locations may be used depending upon workload. Sessions span a range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the age and developmental level of children, and their engagement and interest with program activities. Does it cost anything? The My Kite Will Fly program does not cost you any money for patients, carers and family members, particularly young children to participate. I'm worried about telling my kids I have cancer. How can My Kite Will Fly help us? The My Kite Will Fly program works with patients, carers and children to create a safe space to discuss issues rising from a cancer diagnosis. The program has been divided into separate categories – My Feelings, Special People, Special Places, Diagnosis, Treatment, Very Ill, Special Memories, Helping and Questions. The program can be tailored to fit with what is relevant to your family and what suits your child's developmental level and interests. For example, a 7 year old girl will have different needs, questions, interests and understanding of what is happening than those generated by a 3 year old boy. The website is designed to suit the needs of each child both individually and as a member of their family. |
